Throttle Cable
Starting in 2003, a few of us started to hear stories of Oldcorollas
whose throttle cables had stuck down whilst the car was being driven.
At first it was KE30s, but talking to people, it seems KE20s and KE10s
have done the same thing as well. It seemed like these parts are at the
end of their serice life. This happened to Nikki's Rollie in late 2003
and it ended up like this:
The problem exists in that the core of the cable is wound wire, coated
with plastic, riding inside a plastic sheath that has a coil inside it
to help it maintain a strong shape. After 30-odd years in service, the
plastic wears through on the inner core, which then starts to rub on
the internal spring. Eventually, just like a rope in a Road Runner
cartoon, the individual windings of the core break and poke out. This
causes them to jam on the sheath, usually at full throttle.
My KE25's throttle cable stuck down in mid 2004. I ordered a genuine
cable at a price of $120. Cafee got an aftermarket cable for his KE30
for about $35, but they only make ones for KE55/70. The only difference
between them is the later model T-bar on the carby end is slightly
larger, so you'll need to grind/drill out a KE30 carb linkage to suit,
or use a KE55/70 carb or throttle wheel.
If you're reading this and you have a car of KE30 or older vintage,
perhaps it's time to invest in a new throttle cable before the
inevitable happens?
