wikis
wikis are great. they’re a web technology that allows anyone (authors, fans, you, me, anyone!) to make contributions to webpages on a range of topics, which are instantly viewable by the next person who comes along. other people can then edit the pages, building on the things you and others have written
probably the most famous wiki is wikipedia, which attempts to be a user-made free encyclopedia, and does a pretty good job of it, though internal politics and deletionism vs inclusionism tend to ruin it
here are some other wikis i’ve found to be useful and/or that i contribute to:
- Rollaclub FAQ – the continuation of my own Oldcorollas FAQ
- Doom Wiki – everything you could ever imagine about my favorite game
- QuakeWorld Wiki – modern Quake multiplayer derivatives
- Bulbapedia – who ever thought Pokemon could be so complex!
- EliteWiki – about Ian Bell’s old ELITE game, though mostly used for Oolite
- RogueBasin – the roguelike wiki
- CrawlWiki – about Dungeon Crawl, a great roguelike game
- Wikihack – “One big spoiler” for the NetHack roguelike game
- Wookieepedia – the Star Wars wiki
- Forgotten Realms Wiki – because I’m a D&D nerd
- Grand Theft Wiki – way too much info about Grand Theft Auto games
- Uncyclopedia – the “content-free encyclopedia”, a humorous parody on Wikipedia
- Encyclopedia Dramatica – incredibly offensive, Not Safe For Work, and hilarious! visit at your own peril
you can make your own wiki for free at wikia, pbwiki or wikidot
