quake 1 & 2

i’m gonna give quake a mention here too. personally, i can’t stand the single player, but it’s heaps of fun to play multiplayer. QUAD DAMAGE!
like doom, quake’s source was opened, leading to a whole heap of clients with improved features
here are some links for things to play quake with:
- darkplaces - best quake engine out there. flawless opengl linux performance too!
- fuhquake - this is a good engine too, windows kiddies seem to like this one
- quake revitalization project - improved models and textures, make q1 look new again!
- shub-hub texture replacements - more improvements here. darkplaces-ultimate is good. or, if you think your videocard is up to it, try one of the rygel-dp packs

quake2 is much better single player
whilst the source for q2 is open as well, i’ve found the best way to play this in both windows and linux is to use the original win32 binaries. use wine linux
here are some google searches for q2 levels i like to play :P
- Doom E1M1 Q2 - "exact conversion of Doom E1M1 map to Quake 2"
- Doom II Q2 - "a near 100% conversion for Quake2 with full Doom2 textures"
- Slipgate ‘98 - "straight-up, knockdown, dragout conversion of Classic Quake’s The Slipgate Complex"
