red licorice

whilst living in perth, cherie and i sampled pretty much every red licorice we could get our hands on, in the quest to find the ultimate texture and taste. here’s what we found:

John Walker Chocolatier - Soft-Eating Red Licorice
(London Court, Perth)

the tastiest, sweetest, softest, most delightful red licorice in the world. if i didn’t know any better, i’d say it’s an aniseed-based licorice with raspberry flavouring. so soft you stretch it just getting it out the packet! nothing can ever beat this!!!

Ricci - Raspberry Soft Licorice
(Various supermarkets)
nicest of all the candy-type red licorices, this one is soft, flavoursome, and not too sweet

Kenman’s Red Licorice Strap
(Perth Train Station)
grotty mass produced cheap candy-type red licorice

No-Name Red Licorice
(Perth Train Station)
a candy type red-licorice in a narrow, medium-length twist, chewy but medium-level flavoursome.

RJ’s - Natural Raspberry Licorice Logs
(Queens Park IGA)
a candy-type red licorice that is more soft-eating than it first feels.
has a strange flavour, not really that strong initially, you can taste
it as you chew, but has more of an aftertaste, than a “taste” as such
