favorite doom levels

here are some cool maps i’ve found over time:

doom redemption by slayer – my favorite episode 1 replacement
a 2003 tribute to all 4 episodes of ultimate doom, squeezed into one episode. the level design is modern and tricky, yet feels familiar and true to the original without being a copy or ripoff. the author has also remixed all the music in MOD format, ending up with an awesome soundtrack
back 2 basics by espi – my favorite episode 2 replacement
though espi claims this is “very basic” the detailing looks better than most peoples’ serious efforts. every map is easy to get around and switches back in just the right places. the theming is awesome, you really feel the bloody flesh of hell invade the base. just play it
needs more detail by fiend – my favorite doom 1 megawad
a classic-styled three episode set, intentionally underdetailed to focus on gameplay. this really feels like you’re playing the original all over again, just brilliant
the rebirth by vader – my favorite doom 2 megawad
an awesome 32-level megawad from 2003, follows doom 2’s storyline in its’ own style. the levels are great, varied in all the right ways, tough without being over the top. the most solid one-man effort i’ve ever seen. cannot recommend this enough

nostromo’s run by rich johnston
good level of detail for 1995 and still a challenge today, makes clever use of the same areas over and over again
99 ways to die by warren marshall
a nice set of castle levels, conveys a great atmosphere and looks attractive despite being made in 1996
yesterday’s nightmare by ray schmitz
a beautiful lovecraftian complex with a high level of detail. one of the most memorable single maps i’ve played
remain (chapter 1) by eternal
a breathtaking remake of the first 11 levels of doom 2. incredible visuals which use the doom engine in ways not often done, i found myself wandering around just looking at the architecture on more than one occasion. not to be missed
ropy and ropy2 by tobias forsberg
an attractive pair of brick levels which will kick your ass. great use of limited resources to create a very atmospheric setting too
classic11 and classic10 by jan van der veken
techbases which are incredibly fun and have some clever secrets. i remember these were very hard to me when i first played them, though not so much now. also released as part of jan’s classic episode 2 and classic11 was improved upon as map01 of endgame
