there’s this thing these days called "web 2.0" which is about making computers themselves redundant by improving www and browser technology so everything you need is available from any device with a browser and internet connection
here are some of the web apps I’ve found useful. most need php, some use sql databases
- wordpress – full-featured content management and blogging system, runs this site (php, sql)
- cmsimple – great flat-file content management system this site used to run on (php)
- fredgallery – awesome simple image gallery (php, gd)
- net2ftp – web-based ftp client (php, sql optional)
- mediawiki – open collaborative software, what wikipedia uses (php, sql)
- pmwiki – smaller wiki application, doesn’t require database (php)
- roundcube – amazing imap mail client (php, sql)
- phproxy – browse sites from your webhost
- wakaba – imageboard formerly known as trevorchan, run your own /b/ (php, sql)
and things supplied by other sites
- gmail – best email service out there
- google docs – free online word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software
- google reader – rss/atom/xml feed aggregator (aka: a news reader)
